The Dilemma

It has now been a couple of years since John moved in next door with his family. While I have always been friendly with him, my husband has a bit of a different view. You see, John is a handyman and loves to do-it-himself. My husband is a DIY fanatic, too, but when John is around, he gets all nervous and anxious. It’s like John’s presence is a threat to his DIY throne.

The Incident

Last month, my husband was in the garage working on something (what else?). John popped in to say hi and offered to lend a hand. My husband, who was using a circular saw, practically ran away shouting, “I got this!”

To be honest, I did not know how to react. On one hand, I was proud of my husband’s self-sufficiency. On the other hand, I was annoyed that he let his ego come in the way of getting the help he needed.

The Explanation

After the commotion had died down, my husband and I had a long talk about our behavior. He admitted that he was intimidated by John’s expertise and thought he would judge him if he couldn’t handle a task. However, he also understood that DIY doesn’t equate to being macho, and it’s okay to ask for help when needed.

John and I also had a chat, and he promised to be more sensitive about how he presents himself. He said he knew of people that afraid to ask for help, and that it’s not about showing off. It’s about fostering a community and learning from one another.

The Conclusion

So, what did we learn? Well, first of all, pride and ego can sabotage even the most skilled DIY’er. We also learned that there’s no harm in asking for help, and it takes a real man to admit when he needs assistance. Lastly, we learned that it’s important to communicate and foster relationships with neighbors. We all could use a bit of assistance at times, and if we don’t ask our neighbors, who will we ask?
